About caleb

Caleb Ribates is a Filipino-Australian writer, director, and curator.

Caleb’s films explore culture, identity and self. Experimenting with new forms and perspectives of cinema, he challenges Western ideas of how cinema can be realised. Caleb’s work focuses on suggestive storytelling and observational meditations. Caleb is passionate about crafting nuanced stories which reflect the experiences of his community and create cultural engagement and empowerment.

In 2022, Caleb made his feature film debut at the 70th Edition of Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) with ‘Anak’, being the youngest director present. Caleb wrote, directed, edited, and produced ‘Anak’ at the age of 21. He went on to be featured on SBS, Filmink and Philippine Times, as well as making top 10 listings for films at MIFF by The Age and Beat Magazine. His latest work 'Lakad/Walking', premiered at MIFF 2023.

Caleb is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts.
